What is a Powerpoint?

A Powerpoint, often referred to as a power outlet or electrical socket, is a device installed in walls, floors, or other surfaces to provide access to electrical power. It allows electrical devices to be connected to the power supply via plugs. Powerpoints typically consist of one or more sockets into which plugs can be inserted to establish an electrical connection.

Types of Power Outlet?

  • Single Powerpoints: These have one socket for plugging in a single device.

  • Double Powerpoints: These feature two sockets, allowing two devices to be plugged in simultaneously.

  • Quad powerpoint: This offers four sockets for connecting multiple devices.

  • Switched Powerpoints: These include an on/off switch for each socket, providing the ability to control power to each device without unplugging it.

  • Unswitched powerpoint: This lacks a switch and power is constantly supplied to the socket as long as the house’s main power is on. You control power by plugging and unplugging devices.

  • Wall powerpoint: This is the standard type you find mounted on walls throughout your house.

  • USB Powerpoints: These have integrated USB ports along with standard sockets, enabling the direct charging of USB devices.

  • Weatherproof Powerpoints: Designed to be installed outdoors, these are built to withstand various weather conditions with protective covers and durable materials.

  • Smart Powerpoints: These can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app or home automation system, offering features such as scheduling and energy monitoring.

  • RCD (Residual Current Device) Powerpoints: Equipped with an inbuilt RCD, these provide extra protection by cutting off power in the event of a fault or leakage current.

  • Pop-Up Powerpoints: These can be recessed into surfaces like countertops or desks and popped up when needed, providing a sleek and unobtrusive design.

  • Recessed Powerpoints: Installed flush with the wall or surface, these powerpoints offer a clean and streamlined look.

  • Floor Powerpoints: Installed in the floor, these provide power access in open areas away from walls.

How much does it cost to get a PowerPoint installed?

On average, most homeowners can expect to pay between $100 and $250 AUD per PowerPoint installation.
